I Never Forget

I thought I had hidden myself good enough before the change.
I had stood still beneath the largest leaf.
I had covered myself with as many dead sticks as I could.

And yet I was still found.

The little children of Littleroot always found me. Then again I could never change my hiding spot... Mother told me I wasn't allowed to move when I was an tiny egg mixed in with hundreds of others just like me. That was before we evolved for the first time though.

Then again I was the only one who made it... It was right when we were hatching when a flock of Taillow found mothers nest. She tried to defend us. Her beautiful silky wings pushed them away time after time again, but they got her first. They tore her wings from her back, and they tore her apart, their beaks tearing into her body like a knife through butter.

And then they feasted upon my helpless siblings. I couldn't shiver in fear. The air was deathly silent. I realized that our vocals hadn't quite formed yet. We couldn't even scream for help. Somehow though... I survived.

And yet I was still found.

The first one who found me thought I was innocent enough, and in fact I was. You gave me attention even in this worthless form... I couldn't move, but it didn't seem to bother you. I was happy as you made life bearable. I hoped our time would never end, but then you decided to share our love.

The other kids didn't share that love with me.

They insulted me, feared me, and they hated me.

And like all humans, that fear turned into hatred. You tried to hide me, but they always found me. I couldn't move to escape, I couldn't even cry out for you to save me, not that you would. As soon as you saw them attack me you joined in as if their friendship meant more.

Actually you threw the first rock at me.

They continued. Every day you would all come back and point, laugh, and hurt me more and more. You would bash me with sticks, stone me with rocks, and throw me across the ground, allowing the stony rocks upon the ground to slowly tear me apart.

The pain hurt so bad. Yet, you always came back after they left to make sure I was okay. That always gave me hope, until the day you didn't come back. My body was beaten, bruised, and blood seeped out from the cracks that grew wider and wider each day.

You children... You were so cruel to me.

And now the moon washes over my beaten body. I'm writhing in pain, and yet I can't move. Still though, these cracks spread across my body. Your cruel eyes are burned into my brain, I won't forget what you put me through... I never will. Your time has come. As the cracks spread across my body I hatch forth, a new creature. My destination is clear as my wings harden. Littleroot...

The first of the children were so foolish. He had left his window open. The night was humid, I suppose he only wanted fresh air. I silently hovered into the boys room as he snored... His mouth agape. My wings beat against the air as I rested upon the ceiling. Bitter sweet smelling powder slowly began to fill the room. My many eyes resting upon his body as I saw his chest rise a little less with each cycle of inhaling and exhaling until I heard a little cough, and then nothing at all.

I then left without a trace. The next day all you would find in my place back near the tree which you first found me at would be a empty shell of my former self. You won't find me again.

Don't worry though little one I haven't left you. Night will arise once more.
